Spinal fractures are quite common. In the United States alone, an estimated 700,000 spinal fractures occur each year. [1]  Although the majority of spinal fractures (also called vertebral compression fractures) are caused by osteoporosis, cancer and medical treatments such as chemotherapy can also weaken bone and increase the likelihood of fracture.

This section includes information about the various causes of spinal fracture and outlines complications typically associated with this disorder. You are invited to browse these pages to learn more about spinal fractures and balloon kyphoplasty—a minimally invasive procedure that can reduce pain and improve quality of life.
